Superintendent’s Highlight of the Week
I recently spent some time in Old Bethpage classrooms and this week’s highlight comes from an activity that I saw students engaged in that was quite unique. Students in Mrs. Jaskowiak’s and Mrs. Klein’s second grade class were inspired by the work of non-fiction author, Gail Gibbons, and decided to write their own non-fiction book. After studying different types of communities (rural, suburban, and urban), students as part of their Social Studies curriculum, sought out to create an engaging way to present their new knowledge and decided to build a gigantic pop-up book.
Having never created a pop-up book, students relied on trial and error to engineer one that could withstand many reads. In addition to the engineering component, students’ artistic abilities served to create a visually appealing text that evidenced their deep understanding of communities. Utilizing the writing process, students researched, drafted, revised, edited, illustrated, and published their first pop-up book! Who says that a Common Core activity cannot be fun?
Social Studies + Writing + Engineering = Fun in Mrs. Jaskowiak’s and Mrs. Klein’s class.
