Superintendent’s Highlight of the Week
June 17, 2016
Students at Stratford Road Elementary School and POBJFK High School teamed up to support the second grade STEAM unit of study From Egg to Chick. The second grade scientists began by learning about the life cycle of a chicken with their teachers, Mrs. Boehm, Mrs. Briguglio, Ms. Castagna, Ms. Diesenberg, Mrs. Frechtman, Mrs. Greenblatt, and Mrs. Smith. The students’ roles as engineers came next as they designed and built model brooders so that the chicks, once hatched, had a place to live. Their designs were then sent to Mr. Kunz, technology teacher at the high school. Once the eggs arrived, they were kept warm in an incubator as a live webcam feed gave students the ability to monitor them 24 hours a day. The excitement grew as the eggs hatched 21 days later and the students were able to greet the new arrivals.
After much planning, POBJFK welcomed the second graders as they took a special trip to the high school to help build the actual brooders they designed in the technology classroom. They spent time learning about the robotics program from high school students and used zSpace computers for a 3D virtual experience. They also recorded public service announcements in the TV Studio.
Once back at Stratford Road, the chicks moved into their brooders as the students recorded their observations in science journals. This learning experience will help to inspire the future engineers of POB. What an amazing partnership!
P. S. You can visit the chicks at their new home in the Old Bethpage Village Restoration.
